Cootes Family Tree

Getting Started

This family history site presents data from our Roots Magic database as fully linked raw data, indexes and charts that you may browse. However, we have excluded data of all living persons.

Below are descriptions of the features and some hints on getting the most out of them.

Getting Started

Does what it says on the tin and you are here!

Search

A good search facility to find people quickly. Probably the best way of finding your ancestor link to our tree. Just enter a surname or full name and as much or as little information as you wish to get results.

Surname Index

Lists all* of the surnames in our database.  Click a selector button for the first letter of the surname you want and it will take you to the relevant list of surnames beginning with that letter.  Then click the surname in which you are interested.  This will take you to the relevant group of individuals under that surname in the database.

* Excluding all living persons.

Charts

Lists drop-line charts showing descendants, including spouses, of key individuals.  Click on a link for the focus name you wish to view.  Each chart starts with the oldest known person in the tree of the particular focus name.

Roll of Honour

The Roll of Honour includes all people in the database who have been in the armed forces, fought in a war or done something outstanding.  Again click the appropriate link for a list of names and then click on the name you are interested in to be taken to the person page.

Exhibits

Exhibits allows a quick reference to photographs and documents that are available for people within this family tree.

The exhibits can be clicked on to enlarge the thumbnail and the back button can be used to return to the main menu.  Should there be more than one page of exhibits it is possible to move to the next page using the menu option in the top right of the screen next to the other menu options.

BMD Calendar

See at a quick glance whose birthdays, marriages and deaths fall on which days of which months.  The calendars are current allowing the reader to relate events that happened years ago to current day events and timings.

Mapped Events

Shows where events took place.  The map is available in several views and this can be altered using the options top right.  There is also the option to zoom in and out using the plus and minus signs top right.

Contributors

A page to acknowledge those that have added useful information to this genealogical database.

Definitions

List of definitions for occupations which may be obsolete today or less commonly used.

Sources

Under this heading you can find a list of all sources used in the building of this family history. Its just a quick reference page for you.

Links and References

Links and references are pages that I have used to source material for this website.

The Person Page

Each individual has their own person page, showing name (maiden name for females), gender and dates of birth and/or death, if available.

Details of the individual's life are presented in a raw data format, complete with references to any citations, a list of children and the citations.  Any event that is illustrated by a photograph, newspaper cutting or document will have an icon in the shape of a camera to click on to display the relevant picture.

The "family explorer" link on the individual page will link to any family charts available for that individual.  It is possible to click on names on these charts to bring up further individual pages.

Gecoding for Addresses/Place Data

I have used Geocoding for Address/Place data - a coloured circle with a white "B" (representing "Bing Maps"), white "G" (representing "Google Maps") and a white "O" (representing "Open Street Map") in the centre to indicate that a link to a map or the Place is present.  It should be noted that this is not an exact science and, in some cases, the link takes you to a "not found" page or to a completely wrong location (!) - this is particularly the case where the address/place no longer exists!.

Reminder Remember to refresh your browser to ensure you have the most up to date pages. Also clear your history, cookies and/or temporary files on a regular basis to ensure you receive the most up to date pages.

Hint: Probably the quickest way of homing in on the person you are looking for is to use the search facility. Enter the relevant information and if your person is in the tree they should pop up.

Finally happy reading!
